Edmund Manydeeds, Jr., age 85, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, formerly of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at the Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
Ed was born in Prior, Montana, on July 17, 1921, the son of Edmund, Sr. and Mary Jane (High Eagle) Manydeeds. He was an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Lakota Sioux tribe. He graduated from the McGlaughlin High School, McGlaughlin, South Dakota and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education at the Northern State College, Aberdeen, South Dakota. During World War II from August 7, 1942 until November 11, 1945 Ed served with the U.S. Army in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
He and Jennie S. Cascella were united in marriage, in Palmer, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1949.
He began his career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1948. He was a high school teacher at the Cheyenne River Agency from 1948 until 1953. He was a guidance counselor at the Rosebud Agency, Rosebud, South Dakota from 1953 until1954. He was a high school social studies teacher at the Turtle Mountain Agency in Belcourt, North Dakota from 1954 until 1960. Ed was the relocation assistant at the Great Lakes Agency in Ashland from 1960 until 1962. He was employment assistant officer in Ashland from 1962 until 1970. He was the assistant superintendent of the Ashland agency from 1970 until 1977. He was the superintendent of the Great Lakes Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs in Ashland from 1980 until his retirement, after 35 years of continuous federal service.
Survivors include his four sons: Edmund III (Marcia) of Eau Claire; Steve (Mary Jo) of Boulder, Colorado; John (Karen) of Eau Claire and Chris (Maria Helena) of Rockville, Maryland; his daughters: Louise (Pat) Sather of Superior, Wisconsin and Mary Manydeeds of Van Couver, Washington; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; numerous Nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie, on July 4, 2004; his parents; two brothers and two sisters.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, beginning at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2007, and continuing until the time of the Mass.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated for Ed, by Father John Eaton, O.F.M., at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2007, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Ed's casket bearers will include: Edmund Manydeeds, III, Stephen Manydeeds, John F. Manydeeds, Christopher Manydeeds, John E. Manydeeds and Zachary Sather.
Military honors will be provided by the United Chequamegon Area Veterans, of Ashland. Interment in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland will follow.
Memorials are preferred to the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School of Ashland.
